Guatapé from Medellín by Car: Everything You Need to Know

May 5, 2026·8 min read·By Global Car Rental·All articles

Guatapé is a must-do day trip from Medellín. The reservoir, colorful zócalos (painted friezes), and the imposing Piedra del Peñol make this municipality a one-of-a-kind destination you can enjoy in a single day — or stretch into a full weekend. The best way to experience it: in your own rental car, with the freedom to stop wherever you want and explore at your own pace.

The Route: Medellín to Guatapé

The most direct route leaves from El Poblado or downtown Medellín via the Medellín–Bogotá Highway (4G). After El Santuario, take the turnoff toward Guatapé. The road is fully paved and in excellent condition — no SUV or 4x4 needed. Any economy car handles the drive with ease.

Tip: Leave early. Guatapé fills up on weekends and holidays. Arriving before 9 AM guarantees parking and no lines at El Peñol.

La Piedra del Peñol: Antioquia's Icon

La Piedra del Peñol is a 200-meter monolithic rock with 740 zigzagging steps to the summit. From the top you get a 360° view over the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, one of the largest in Colombia. The climb takes 20–30 minutes and admission is around $25,000 COP (~$6 USD) per person.

Guatapé Town: the Zócalos and Waterfront

After descending the Peñol, head to Guatapé town (8 km away). The historic center streets are decorated with colorful zócalos — relief figures on the lower part of each facade that depict local stories and trades. Walking the waterfront promenade and cobblestone alleys is an experience found nowhere else in Colombia.

What to Eat in Guatapé

  • Reservoir trout — fresh and prepared in many ways
  • Bandeja paisa at waterfront restaurants
  • Empanadas and buñuelos at the main square
  • Agua de panela with cheese — the classic Antioquian breakfast

Parking and Car Logistics

There are safe private parking lots near El Peñol (around $5,000–$10,000 COP per hour). In Guatapé town, the main lot is near the waterfront. During peak season they fill up fast — arriving before 10 AM makes all the difference.
